Flora
The Giara is host to an extremely high concentration of species
of flower: 9 species per square kilometre, compared to 0.9 per square
kilometre in the rest of Sardinia. Perhaps the most characteristic
type of plant cover to be found here is that of cork oak woods.
The cork oak (Quercus suber) is a small tree, its distinctive twisted
shape caused by the modelling effect of the wind. Other species
present on the plateau include holm oak, bay oak, lentiscus, corbezzolo
(strawberry tree), cistus and many other plants typical of Mediterranean
macchia. In the marshy areas, 17 species of wild orchid of extraordinary
beauty have been found. "Morisia" is the botanic garden of the Giara,
created by our society on the plateau: here you will be able to
see every species of plant to be found on the Giara. Please contact
us to arrange a visit.

THE CO-OPERATIVE
Composed of 16 members, the co-op was founded in 1997 with the aim
of protecting and maintaining the archaeological and natural heritage
of the Giara plateau. The members of "Sa Jara Manna" are all expert
guides and fully knowledgeable about the area in which they work.
Some are members of the A.I.G.A.E. (The Italian Association of Environmental
Guides). "Sa Jara Manna" proposes a relaxing excursion in search of
a unique ecosystem. The primary objective will be to trace the wild
horses, but the archaeological and botanical aspects of the area will
also be explored. You will be able to discover how the ancient shepherds
lived and worked, visiting the sites of their settlements, settlements
which the co-op is preparing to reconstruct. The proto nuraghe "Brunku
Madugui" can also be visited. Constructed around 1800-1500B.C, it
is seen as one of the earliest examples of Nuraghic architecture in
Sardinia. |
